Ethan's Story...

Ethan has battled Type 1 Diabetes for 5 years. When Ethan was 2 years old, he started having some very odd symptoms. He as completely potty trained, but suddenly started wetting the bed. He would drink anything he could get his hands on and then ask for more. Ethan was always a very independent child. He would rarely sit on your lap any period of time. He got very clingy to me. It was very scary to see all the changes in him over a few months. I knew something was wrong and called the doctor. They asked what his symptoms were and I wasn't sure what to tell them. All I could say is that something was wrong. Luckily, we got to see our primary doctor. She recognized that he wasn't being himself and ordered some blood tests. She came back into the room and told me to go ahead and get him dressed, that Brenner Children's Hospital was waiting on us. She told me that he had Diabetes. I remember just standing there staring at her in disbelief. She took the clothes out of my hands and got him dressed herself. I took Ethan right to the hospital and they were waiting on him. His sugar was over 500 and was a very sick little boy. He stayed in the hospital for 3 days. That Christmas was very special to me and my family. We got our sweet Ethan back! Ethan handles his daily battle with Diabetes so bravely. He has been pumping for 4 1/2 years and he loves it. He is not shy telling people that he has Diabetes and educates everyone that will listen. He was featured in several local magazines this last year and loved being the "Local Hero" for the month of October. We are very involved with JDRF and over the past 5 years, our family team "Ethan's Angels" has raised over $15,000. We know that with every penny raised, that brings a cure that much closer. Ethan is more than just a son, brother, cousin, grandson & nephew...he is our hero!
