Aiden's Diagnosis Story:
We knew that August 18, 2010 was a big day for our family. It was the LAST day before my big sister, Emma, started Kindergarten! My Mommy was off work and we had a full day of fun planned to celebrate our last day of freedom! Little did we know that I would be diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes that afternoon (with a blood sugar of 489!) and we would spend the next week in the hospital getting my blood sugars leveled out, learning how to check my blood sugar, give shots of insulin, and properly count carbohydrates; we learned words that we had never heard before like ketoacidosis and endocrinologist; but I was really brave and got used to getting poked with lots of tiny needles.
Those first few weeks were pretty scary, but even in the hospital we were determined to find something positive that we could gain from this experience. We decided that life was still good. We would continue to place God and family first and do whatever we could to help other people who were going through this same experience. We also decided that we would continue to make sports and physical activity a top priority in our family. My Daddy said, “We will just keep having fun and check a few blood sugars along the way.”
Although the management of my diabetes is slightly more complicated than “checking a few blood sugars”, we have tried very hard to do just that. Right out of the hospital, we became active in our local JDRF. Through some of our friends there, we have gained a very supportive group of friends called the DOC (Diabetes Online Community). It has been so helpful to know that there are so many other families out there going through the same thing as we are!
I am very excited to use my platform as a Diabetes Dude Ambassador to continue to reach out to newly diagnosed families who need support, to raise awareness for Type 1 Diabetes, and to raise money to help find a cure for Type 1!
